Among the many events held at Am Kolel Sanctuary, there are groups that offer retreats that are open to the public. These retreats provide opportunities for new experiences, for expanding present talents, skills and abilities, and/or to deepen your own practices with an intentional group.

Attending these retreats can support your own growth and interests, the groups themselves, and Am Kolel Sanctuary's mission and vision to provide an environment that honors body, mind and spirit.

Check out the upcoming retreats for 2008 and see if something strikes your fancy! And if you know of groups looking for a beautiful space to hold a retreat or training, please guide them our way.

Retreat at Dayspring is a time to be silent, to expect an encounter with God in the interior and exterior silence made possible by the setting. Yet silence is always a gift, God's gift. We enter into retreat, rest, and are still; we wait, are open, and receptive.

The Shalem Institute has been a resource for prayer and deepening in the life of the Spirit for over 30 years and has earned a reputation for assisting people in developing a deeper spirituality in their work and personal lives.

Shalem provides programs and support for spiritual directors, clergy, leaders of contemplative prayer groups and retreats, other lay leaders, and individuals--all who seek to deepen their relationships with God and bring the gifts of contemplative living and leadership to their ministries.

Shalem programs are grounded in the Christian contemplative tradition, with its emphasis on being present to God in all that is, and are also graced by the contemplative wisdom from other faith traditions.

The depth and breadth of experiential programming, integrated with understanding of contemplative classics, spiritual community, and discernment for action have drawn thousands in the Washington DC area, nationally, and internationally. We hope you will join us.

What is Centering Prayer?

Centering Prayer is a method of prayer, which prepares us to receive the gift of God's presence, traditionally called contemplative prayer, which is the opening of mind and heart - our whole being - to God, the Ultimate Mystery, beyond thoughts, words and emotions, whom we know by faith is within us, closer than breathing, thinking, feeling and choosing; even closer than consciousness itself. The root of all prayer is interior silence. Though we think of prayer as thoughts or feelings expressed in words, this is only one expression. Contemplative Prayer is a prayer of silence, an experience of God’s presence as the ground in which our being is rooted, the Source from whom our life emerges at every moment.

  • DEEP LISTENING GROUP : An Oasis for Busy Executives

If we want to create a space that welcomes the soul, we must speak our own truth to the center of the circle and listen receptively as others speak theirs. (Parker J. Palmer)

Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 5:30 to 9pm: Orientation and Light Dinner
January 7, February 4, March 4 and April 1, 2009: 7 to 9pm: Listening Group

at the Dominican Retreat (co-sponsor with the Shalem Institute)

How do you ground yourself in the midst of this turbulence? How do you connect with the Spirit in a world where you hardly have time to breathe? How can you connect your sense of call to the way you’re living in the world? Where is God in all this?

In this five-session program, you’ll come together with others who face similar challenges as well as the desire for a deeper connection to the Holy. We’ll begin with a facilitated session to clarify and practice our process. We’ll continue our sessions with deep listening—to each other and to where God is working within and among us.

Leaders from all types of organizations and from all faith traditions are welcome. You may register for the entire five sessions. Or if you’re unsure, come to the first session and decide if you want to continue this journey. Please note, however, that if you decide to continue after November, we ask that you give priority to your presence at each meeting.

Leah Rampy , Ph.D., is a graduate of Shalem’s Personal Spiritual Deepening Program, a Presbyterian layperson, and a frequent retreat leader. She is a certified executive coach and leadership consultant and has worked with numerous executives in organizations of all sizes.

Cost: $400 for the entire program. Or you may pay $100 for only the November session, including the meal. If there is room in the program and you decide to continue
through the remainder of the program, your payment will be applied to the total program cost.

January-December 2009
Make a Date with a Mystic
A Free Series and Open to the Public
Tuesdays, 7:30-9:00 PM

"When I think of mystics, I think of ordinary people living out an incredibly intimate experience of relationship with God— gifted, too, with wisdom, grace and spiritual communion. And I wonder what the message is for me in my life today."

Please join us Tuesday evenings as we immerse ourselves in the stories of fourteen ordinary men and women who led extraordinary, God-gifted lives. Learn what they have to teach us today and how their lives can still inspire and influence us.
Each evening will include an introduction to the mystic, prayer, and small group sharing. No registration necessary. Free will offerings gratefully accepted.

The Parish Based Weekend Retreat 2008 - 2009
"Pilgrim Companions"

The fundamental grace of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola can be found in the continual petition that is made "to know Jesus more intimately, to love him more intensely and so to follow him more closely." This year's retreat focuses our prayer on this petition and the deepening of our Christian life in this grace.
