- Celebration of Creation
April 16-22
This retreat will begin each day with an optional morning yoga session (gentle, basic yoga for all ages, followed by a more demanding sequence for those with a more advanced practice). Following breakfast, we will open our day together with morning prayer, followed by a study, spiritual exercise (journaling, prayer, meditation), and group discussion of sacred texts from various faith traditions which celebrate creation. After lunch we will immerse ourselves in God’s creation by hiking as a group in Ghost Ranch's spectacular landscape, or by going on a field trip to a nearby site (Ojo Caliente, Christ in the Desert Monastery or Bandelier National Monument). These afternoon immersions are optional. After dinner we will gather for a brief evening session to process our day, followed by a closing evening prayer.
Taught by Linda Forsberg.
- Interim/Transitional Ministry Basic Training
April 16-22
Are you intrigued by the challenges of interim/transitional ministry? Wondering if you have the makeup for this work? Or have you begun an interim position without the specialized training? This class is designed to introduce interim ministry to those contemplating it and provide the basic skills for those who have just begun. On Ghost Ranch's holy ground you can begin exploring the particular skills required in this ministry and the personal traits and commitments which make one effective in interim ministry. There will be time for discerning your call to this ministry.
Taught by James Roghair and Carol Shellenberger:
- Interpersonal Neurobiology: Healing In Relationship
April 16-22
This course is about the brain in the body (the embodied brain) and interpersonal neurobiology developed by Dr. Daniel Siegal and Dr. Allan Shore. Whole brain knowing puts the relationship as the crucial healing agent for personal and interpersonal well-being as well as professional relationships. We heal and grow in relation. The more we are able to heal ourselves, the more possibilities we have to heal the world: "What you are doing for yourself--any gesture of kindness, any gesture of gentleness, any gesture of honesty and clear seeing toward yourself--will affect how you experience your world. In fact, it will transform how you experience the world. What you do for yourself, you're doing for others, and what you do for others, you're doing for yourself." (Pema Chodron)
Taught by Sylvia Stenitzer:
- Soulful Singing: Finding & Singing Our Songs
June 4-10
Songs and singing have the power to connect us to one another. Using the Psalms as one model we will sing songs of lament, protest, thanksgiving and joy. Songs from singing traditions including Native American chants, folk music and contemporary hymns will have you leaving Ghost Ranch with new songs in your heart. Taught by Renita Banks.
- Food, Glorious Food: The Eucharist & Your Foodshed
June 18-24
Glorious food--sacrament, commodity, both or neither? If most of us do not produce our own food, what is our relationship to the food web and our foodshed? If being at table is a core sacrament for most religions, as it is for the Christian Eucharist, what is its relationship to the foodshed? Is there a Eucharistic vision of the natural world that intersects agribusiness? What does Eucharist mean if God is a gardener, we are tillers and keepers and the world is hungry? The anchor book for the week is Norman Wirzba's newest book, Food and Faith.
The Food, Glorious Food workshop is part of a ten-year commitment on the part of Ghost Ranch to “Earth-Honoring Faith: A Song of Songs.” The goal of the series is to construct justice-centered, earth-honoring, Christianities that promote interfaith efforts on common earth issues.
- Healing The Heart With Self-Compassion
June 25-July 1
Self- compassion, the ability to be kind and caretaking toward oneself in times of pain, loss and failure, is at the heart of the spiritual journey. Yet practicing self- compassion is one of the great challenges many of us face in a world that rewards us for being tough on ourselves and always asking for more. Using group dialog, meditation, movement, journaling and joyful bodily rejuvenation, this loving and humor-filled workshop will help you listen to the wise, authentic voice that is already inside you, and to become more forgiving, compassionate, creative and whole.
- Life After 60: Getting To The Soul Of The Matter
June 25-July 1
The poet Mary Oliver asks: "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" For those of us over 60 this question has special poignancy. We will spend a week together deepening and clarifying the meanings and possibilities for this time of our lives. The seminar is designed to elicit both a deepening of understanding of one's individual calling and needs, of "soul work", as well as possible practical actions that might follow the workshop such as following up on interests in peace and justice work, changing habits to lead to greater mental and physical health, steps to improve significant relationships, and planning for older-age needs. We will have time to use the beauty and quiet of Ghost Ranch for personal reflection. Participants should be between 56-106 and be open to new experiences and new points of view.
.
- Heaven Of The Heart: Creating A Space For Sacred Imagination
June 25-July 1
What connects our spirituality, creativity and living out our vocation? How might an intentional engagement with our creativity and our spirituality increase our ability to live as people of faith? In this workshop you will push back the boundaries of familiar distractions and enter a Sabbath time in which to explore the intersection between creativity and spirituality. Using hands-on exercises, personal reflection and imagination see how your creativity can form sacred community.
Instructor is Chuck Hoffman.
- To The Home Of Peace: A Spirituality For Change
July 2-8
Casa del Sol at Ghost Ranch is a home of peace in the high desert of New Mexico where groups and individuals come seeking new beginnings in their lives and world. During this week we will explore what it means to live in harmony with the earth and to choose the way of peace in every moment and relationship of our lives as a way of serving transformation in the world. The retreat, which uses as its basic text words from the Quran, 'God invites us to the Home of Peace,' continues the work of the Praying for Peace Initiative in which we pray and chant for peace by using words from the Hebrew scriptures, the teachings of Jesus and the Quran. Our days will consist of prayer at the rising of the sun in Ghost Ranch's Agape Center courtyard, teaching and sharing in the mornings and evenings (sometimes at Casa del Sol, 2 miles from the main campus), and rest and silence in the afternoons.
This course is also offered July 9-15 and July 16-22-especially designed for young adults in their twenties and thirties.
