Listening to the Voice Within.....
Thursday - Sunday, July 10 - 13.

This retreat is for those who yearn for a renewed sense of direction, clarity about the meaning and purpose of their lives and an understanding of their "call." Perhaps you are doing things that you are really tired of or have no energy for. Perhaps you are nearing retirement but have no idea about what to do next. Perhaps you are between positions or are trying to decide whether to explore other options. Perhaps you feel restless, unsatisfied, and long for a new and more (or less) challenging position. In this retreat, we'll explore ways of understanding "call" and our "calling". We'll examine personal needs and how they affect our relationship to our work and the world. We'll look at blocks to hearing Holy Invitation and practice listening to the voice within throught times of silence, creativity, sharing, and journaling.

Bob Stice,
LPCC, retreat leader, is a counselor, communicator, facilitator, observer of human behavior, and lover of all creatures. For the past 30 years he has maintained a comprehensive private practice in counseling and psychotherapy in addition to filling various clinical and administrative positions in behavioral healthcare. Annual Micaceous Clay Pottery Workshop...
Sunday - Saturday, July 20 - 26.

Learn to make micaceous clay pottery with artist and potter Shelden Nunez-Velarde. Shelden is from the Ollero band (white clan) of the Jicarilla Apache. Pottery making was done in his family four generations ago by his great, great, great grandmother, O'ha Montoya. Many of his traditional Apache shapes and simple designs were inspired by her earlier works. Shelden enjoys not only making beautiful pottery but also educating others in this art form. His work has received significant recognition with invitations to participate in both the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market. During this workshop, Shelden will lead participants through the process of making micaceous clay pottery, from preparing the clay to shaping the pot to firing it in the traditional way. In addition, Shelden will introduce participants to two additional techniques: using pine pitch to make pottery water tight and using items found in nature to “paint” pottery. The workshop is open to adults and young people, twelve and older. No prior experience required. Commuter fee is $200 and includes lunch. Fee for those staying at the center is $500 or $950/two people registering together. Space is limited, so register early.

Sacred Listening: Group Spiritual Direction
with Patience Robbins Patience

August 18 - 24, 2008

Sacred listening as practiced in group spiritual direction is a unique way of tending to the Spirit of God in our daily lives. By gathering in small groups of 5 or 6 with an experienced facilitator we will listen for the ways in which the Spirit is alive within, among and around us.

During the week, the underlying assumptions and process of group spiritual direction will be explored. We will also have the opportunity to experience it. There will be ample time for prayerful silence including a 24 hour silent retreat during the middle of the week. At the end of the week, we will notice and claim what is most powerful and healing about this process and how sacred listening together can transform our communities and our world. The evening sessions will allow for time for a variety of prayer forms, followed by some reflection and sharing.

T
his model of group spiritual direction is based on the book Group Spiritual Direction by Rose Mary Dougherty of the Shalem Institute, Bethesda, MD. This workshop would benefit spiritual directors, pastors, deacons, those who are intentional about their spiritual journey and those who want to cultivate this sacred listening as a way of nurturing peace in our world.

Patience Robbins Patience has her M.A. and is a Roman Catholic laywoman. She has been the Director of Shalem Institute’s Personal Spiritual Deepening Program since 2003 and also serves on the staff of Shalem's Leading Contemplative Prayer Groups & Retreats and Clergy Spiritual Life & Leadership Programs. She has served as a facilitator and has served on the Shalem teaching staff for group spiritual direction since 1997.
