Opening Ourselves to God’s Unfathomable Embrace:
Exploring the Mystical Dimension of Faith

Contemplation, Mysticism, and Jungian, Celtic, Art Prayer, Exploration

June 7-8, 2008

What does it mean to experience God in your life? As people of faith, when we pray to the God of our understanding, we may conceive of that communication as a one-way conversation. This retreat will encourage you to open yourself to a divine truth—that God is engaged with you in a two-way communion. Each moment of our lives, the God of mystery expresses loving and longing for us. During the weekend, we will reflect on the insights of ancient and modern spiritual mystics and healers through presentation, discussion, and contemplative activities. We will meditatively explore the mystic world of synchronicity through:

Jungian Active Imagination
Celtic Spirituality

Retreat Leader
Pierrette R. Stukes, PhD

Spiritual Director, Workshop Facilitator,
and Retreat Leader

West Jefferson, NC

336-982-2402

pstukes@skybest.com

Pierrette R. Stukes received her PhD in English literature from The George Washington University, specializing in psychoanalysis and cultural theory, in 2002. She taught on the college level for 15 years. She is currently completing a two-year, certified Program in Spiritual Direction, which trains both laypersons and ordained professionals to be with others in a sacred space of holy listening for the inner voice of God. “The pastoral theologian Henri J. M. Nouwen wrote eloquently of the inherent woundedness of the human spirit, a woundedness that life itself imposes and which can only be sutured by the loving Physician of mystery. This woundedness is the result of our birthing, into our families of origin, our communities, our culture. These vital births leave some aspect of our true and essential Selves behind in a fine dust of forgetfulness. This forgetfulness is a kind of grieving, but we no longer know that what we grieve is our connection to the abiding presence of God. In my own life of woundedness and healing, I have been met and embraced by the unfathomable and yet wholly intimate God at the core of life itself. Please join with me in experiencing the grace that binds life itself to a holy center.”

Our Mission: Heart Directions, Inc. is a ministry of compassionate service. Our programs are grounded in the philosophy of spiritual hospitality which is a way of being present with you in an atmosphere of mutual respect and holy reverence so that both you and the facilitator may listen for the Spirit at the center of your life. We are post-denominational in emphasis. Our programs integrate various spiritual traditions to honor and to enable an experience of God that transcends cultural representations. Heart Directions, Inc. does not offer therapy, counseling, or advice; nor are its programs academic in nature. Instead, its facilitator creates a sacred space in which individuals may explore for themselves the spiritual integration of the psyche, the soul, the mind, the heart, and the body.

CENTERING PRAYER AND THE PATH TO INNER PEACE: Living in the World without Being of the World

May 2-4
(May 5 optional extra day)
2 Nights
$130 ($65 deposit)

Acquisition of material goods and the fulfillment of desires are frequently proclaimed as the supreme values in today’s world, but experience proves that they only end in frustration, anxiety, and inner turmoil. Centering Prayer and its related contemplative practices offer a much more satisfying alternative by teaching a method of self-surrender which leads to the realization of the True Self-- the only sure path to peace.

Teaching no religious dogma, and affirming its solidarity with contemplative practices throughout the world, Centering Prayer provides a means of arriving at the direct experience of God through a method of meditation based upon ancient Christian monastic mysticism and enriched by eastern meditative practices. People of all spiritual practices are welcome. Christians who may have been alienated from the religion of their birth will find that this open, non-judgmental, self-surrendering approach to relating to the Divine offers them a new and more inclusive place within their own spiritual heritage.

This silent weekend retreat will include brief instructive talks on the method of Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina (awakening to the Divine Word through sacred scripture), the practice of Presence, the Welcoming Prayer, and various other contemplative practices, as well as extended periods of meditation using the method of Centering Prayer. The retreat is open to beginners as well as veteran meditators. [For those who wish more silence and prayer, the retreat directors will remain for an extra day of meditation on Monday. (Add this if you want us to stay an extra day.)]

A. Vernon Dixon, M.D., and Mary Joyce Dixon, M.Ed., are a husband and wife who were in the private practice of psychiatry and psychometry for over 23 years. After studying the mystical practices of many spiritual traditions, their practice became Centering Prayer. The Dixons are trained and certified by Contemplative Outreach, Ltd. They have presented introductory workshops in LA, NC, and GA, as well as at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. They lead Centering Prayer intensive and post-intensive retreats at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, GA. Vernon and Mary Joyce are also third-degree Reiki practitioners who are active in their church and in various peace, social justice, and environmental causes.

Kanuga Fly-fishing Retreat
May 4-8, 2008
Step into a stream and discover a whole new world of wisdom.

"Fly-fishing is not so much about catching and releasing fish as just being in the stream, observing, having faith, being humbled," said the Rev. Mark Wilson, retreat coordinator. "It’s a setting where God can teach us a lot about ourselves and following Christ."
View photos from the 2007 Fly-fishing Retreat

This Sunday-Thursday retreat begins with two days of instruction by patient experts, who help newcomers as well as experienced fly fishers. New this year: practice fishing on a freshly stocked lake at one of Kanuga’s camps. This will give you more room to cast and increase your chance of catching a trout early in the week.

Then you'll be able to hone your skills with two days of fishing on the nearby Davidson River, one of Trout Unlimited magazine’s Top 100 rivers in the nation.

Within 30 minutes’ drive are many other prime trout waters. As rewarding as the fishing is getting to know other people who appreciate this quiet encounter with the outdoors, where anything caught is released.

Retreat Leaders: Bob Clouser is one of the nation’s foremost fly fishermen. He invented the famed Clouser Minnow fly pattern, which is known world-wide and has caught more varieties of fish than any other fly. He owns and operates Clouser's Fly Shop, a full-service, fresh and saltwater fly-fishing shop in Middletown, Pa., near the Susquehanna River. He leads tours and seminars across the country on tying and casting.

Nationally-known fly tier Kevin Howell is the owner of Davidson River Outfitters in Pisgah Forest, N.C., and winner of the 2007 Fly-fishing Masters national championship. He is a certified casting instructor with the Federation of Fly Fishers and the fly-tying editor for Fly-Fishing the Mid Atlantic States. He co-edited the book Tying and Fishing Southern Appalachian Trout Flies (Fern Creek Press, 1999).

The Rev. Mark Wilson, retreat coordinator and chaplain, is rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Fairhope, Ala., chairman of the Kanuga Program Committee and an avid fly fisherman. He will lead daily worship and spiritual reflections in Kanuga’s chapels, which include two outdoor locations.
