Darrell Calkins has taught, lectured and led seminars and retreats around the world for more than 25 years. As a teacher, his classes have covered a spectrum that ranges from communication skills for psychologists and priests to stress management and well-being for terminally ill children. He has served as a consultant and trainer for teachers, artists, athletes, negotiators and others in high-performance professions.
Mr. Calkins’ background includes studies in philosophy, comparative religions and psychology at UC Berkeley and Yale, as well as a three and half-year residence in a Zen monastery in Japan. He has practiced martial arts, yoga and related disciplines for 35 years. The author of numerous essays and a recently published collection of letters, he currently writes and leads retreats in southwestern France, where he lives with his wife and two children.
"Over the last ten years I have seen quite a few spiritual teachers. Some were amazingly eloquent, some were spiritual quacks, most had some spark of brilliance, and all of them relied on tiresome spiritual stereotypes to sell themselves. But Darrell's work is different; it is completely down-to-earth at the same time that it is dazzlingly original. The range of topics covered in a retreat or seminar is immense, and they are as applicable to daily life as they are to mysticism. Simply put, a seminar with Darrell is a riveting, challenging, joyful and unforgettable experience."
