Retreat Leader: Paul Schulkind
Leader Biography: A Wall Street dropout into the writing life, Paul Schulkind has a BS in Economics and International Business and an MBA in Finance, both degrees from New York University. While studying for an advanced degree in Political Economy at Fordham University, Paul ran up against a writer’s block that put an end to his academic aspirations. Six years of study at the Center for Creative Writing dissolved the block and transformed Paul into a bona fide, full-time writer of short fiction. His desire is to share what he’s been given: the exquisite pleasure of writing. Paul has been an Associate of the Center since 2000. He has been leading the twice-yearly Montauk Creative Writing Retreat for 12 years. Paul also offers one-on-one coaching and editing. Writers who have studied with Paul are enthusiastic about his teaching abilities: "Some people have a green thumb and can make anything grow. With his special mix of humor, kindness and intelligence, Paul Schulkind tends to his students like any masterful gardener. The seeds of each person’s unique writer’s voice are watered and nourished. His garden flourishes. Writers burst forth in a spectacular array of color and individuality." -- Dr. Joanie Watkins

The essence of meditation is a natural experience of healing: the call of spirit to the peace within. We all have a need for such healing – if we are honest and look at our own life, we would likely recognize pain, suffering and darkness in certain areas of our day-to-day living.

The deepest repair to our being is where meditation gives us its greatest gift: the realization of who we are. With this comes freedom… the freedom to be the real me.

In this retreat, we will work with colors and virtues as a means of healing, combined with the power of meditation to return to our natural state of total well-being.

Learn How Food Affects Thoughts and Feelings

We all know the phrase “you are what you eat.” But we usually think of the physical effects of food on our health without considering the more subtle aspects of how our thoughts and emotions are affected by food.

Throughout history, our food choices, including the way food is prepared, what and how we eat and our relationship to food have had a profound influence. Food influences our mental, spiritual and physical well-being, and it influences the societies in which we live. Join us and learn how food choices and food preparation affect our emotions, integrity, decisions, stress, tolerance, contentment and health.
Learn simple and tasty vegetarian recipes that you can take home and cook easily. This retreat includes:

· Hands on demonstrations

· Classes on benefits of vegetarian diet

· Meditation

· Fun activities

Here’s what a participant in a past Cooking for Peace retreat said:

"The whole retreat was both enjoyable and very enlightening. Both, my boyfriend and myself have become vegetarians since then. We still eat fish now and then (but the plan is to ease off that too). The retreat really opened our eyes to so many things that we were not aware of and has made a difference to our lives. Thank you. "

This is a weekend of education, inspiration, exploration and entertainment.

Title of Retreat : Let it be Dark that We may See the Light
Date of Retreat: Nov 27 2015
Retreat End Date : Nov 29 2015
Spiritual Orientation: Christian
Primary Theme: Prayer
Name and Location of Retreat Center :
 Holy Cross Monastery - Episcopal
Website: www.holycrossmonastery.com
Email: guesthouse@hcmnet.org
Telephone: 845-384.6660

Come, take refuge. Enter the healing power of monastic rhythm each day and integrate body and spirit. Align body and breath through yoga postures in prayer; sit in guided and silent meditation; chant the psalms with the monks; and sing Taizé chants in the beautiful chapel.

The Advent season calls us to prepare ourselves to receive the gift of God’s light and say yes. The darkness we enter is a leaving behind bright lights and 'barbed-wire entanglements' of our 'own ideas' and our 'own mechanical devices.' We allow ourselves to dwell in don’t know, we allow that place of innocence within us to open, in order to make room for God.

The yoga and meditation on this retreat will be focused on untangling the knots of expectations and preconceptions and habits long overused. That is: unwinding the stuck places so that we may open to each present moment as a new beginning with the possibility of the miracle of God’s presence felt and received.

While all are welcome, some previous yoga experience is recommended but not required. All poses and sequences can be modified for any body. If you have some familiarity with some of the postures then entering into prayer comes more easily.
Please bring a symbol of your intention for the retreat to place on a prayer table in the practice room. Yoga props are provided.
